I have have several installs by Home Depot over the years and they always use a third party contractor. Their flooring contractors are the absolute worst.
I know that usually, when you are comparing us vs. Home Depot, we come out lower than Home Depot for hardwood and laminate. And, when comparing vs. carpet, I sometimes come out a tad higher. Because we are a nationwide buying group , we buy directly from the manufacturers and get good rates – usually we are buying it at the same rates as Home Depot.

When I contacted corporate, they stated that was all they were willing to do, that the local store manager had authorization to provide different resolution if he so desired. When I contacted him, he refused to discuss it with me since I had contacted corporate and the BBB. Beaulieu responded nothing was wrong with their product.
The local HD manager offered to reimburse me for having the carpet on the stairs replaced. He had also checked and my carpet color and style was no longer available. I did not want to have mismatched carpet on my stairs, nor did I feel this addressed the multitude of other issues, so I declined his offer. They keep stalling and gathering more information while still telling me they were going to do everything they could to resolve the issue. They also stated that I had not notified them of the issues in a timely manner. My view has not been positive in some locations when it comes down to who will actually be doing your work.
The simple solution to this is to up your quality slightly to compensate. Never buy the cheaper version of anything from Big Box. If a tile suits your needs then it is best to inspect the boxes. They are not usually handled with the care that they deserve but this leads to an awareness of product quality. If you can see that there are several damaged items in the package that was mishandled then it may not be up to par. You save money at these stores so you have to operate in a middle ground.
With Lowes or Home Depot, this won’t likely be the case. Most of the employees in their stores are not tradespeople so they won’t be able to give you the advice and information you need. Even then, Home Depot appears to have more experienced and knowledgeable staff. This is likely due to the higher retention rate at Home Depot.
Take for example today’s popularity in grey toned floors, distressed or character wide plank flooring. They do not exist, yet they’ve been popular for a few years now, especially the wider plank products. This is more likely due to the store that you chose . (I’m not sure if Formica still makes laminate or if they discontinued it). You are correct that you may spend less at Hope Depot, but in general, their products are lower quality and so are the helpers there, so you are more likely to have a problem.
